Girls varsity volleyball battles to obtain win in the state playoffs

On Tuesday, Nov. 25, the varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated the Vintage High School Crushers 3-0 in the first round of state playoffs.

Although Redwood defeated Vintage in three straight sets with scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-22,  it was not an easy win for the Giants. In the second and third games, Vintage took an early lead, forcing Redwood to battle late in the game.

“They had really big hitters. It was definitely harder to line up our defense, but I think we stepped it up,” senior Bailey Osborn said.

Sophomore McKenzie Cooke and junior Marguerite Spaethling each made ten kills for the Giants.

Because both teams had strong offense and precise hitting from players on both sides, it was Redwood’s defense that outmatched Vintage.

“Lily [Barber] and [Mckenzie] Cooke really picked it up in the back row,” Osborn said. “They played outstanding defense. That was what won the game for us.”

The varsity girls’ volleyball team will play Los Altos on the road in the next round of state playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 29.
