The freshman football team defeated Novato High School 28-6 at the Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Redwood’s strong defense carried them to an easy victory over the Novato team, which was plagued by fumbles.

According to Redwood coach Rob Hobart, the team’s aggressive defensive line was the key to winning the game.

Standouts in the game included freshman Alejandro Deleon, who made several key blocks for Redwood, and freshman Wyatt McCullough, who helped hold Novato off after he came in as a replacement for freshman starting quarterback Alex Diaz.

Diaz suffered a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter when he was pushed by a Novato player after he had gone out of bounds during a run.

Freshman wide receiver Eli Neiman helped Redwood get off on the right foot with a 45 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Deleon also scored in the first quarter on a 34 yard run.

Backed by strong group tackling skills on the defensive end, Redwood limited the number of Novato first downs and held them scoreless until the fourth quarter.

The team’s next game will be against San Rafael High School on Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
